The History Of The Belgian Shepherd One of the Belgian Shepherds is also known as Laekenois. They originated in Belgium during the 1200's.
The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest of the four Belgian Sheepdogs. Since 1959 in America the AKC has recognized the Groenendael, Malinois and Tervuren as separate breeds, but has not recognized the Laekenois.
Description Of The Belgian Shepherd The breeds average height for dogs is 24 - 26 inches and bitches 22 - 24 inches. They weigh from 55 - 65 pounds.
The Laekenois's 2” long wiry coat and fringes on the head give this shepherd a shaggy, woolly look. Similar in size and body type to the other Belgian Sheepdogs. Colors include a range from fawn to mahogany with a black overlay.
Coat & Grooming The rough, wiry coat of the Laekenois needs to be trimmed about twice a year, depending upon the quality of the coat. Avoid close trimming. Use a coarse-toothed comb for grooming. Bathe only when necessary to avoid removal of the natural waterproofing of the coat. This breed sheds little to no hair.

Life Expectancy and Health The average life span for a Belgian Shepherd is around 12-14 years.
This hardy breed has no major health concerns.
A few reported instances of: eye problems, excessive shyness, excessive aggressiveness and occasionally seen hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia..

Preferred Environment and Exercise Requirements The Belgian Laekenois will be fine living in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. Moderately active indoors and would prefer an average size yard. They prefers cool climates, but will adapt. They can live outdoors.
They require a lot of exercise, preferably off the leash in a safe area.
